It depends on the type of stone veneer you are installing. If you are using a natural stone such as limestone, marble, or sandstone, then you will need to use a mortar bed and cement board under the stone veneer. However, if you are using a manufactured stone veneer such as brick, slate, or HardiePlank®, then you do not need to use a mortar bed or cement board.
