It can if not done correctly. Dethatching is the process of removing the thatch layer which is a build-up of dead grass, matted down by traffic and rain. Too much dethatching can remove live grass blades and damage the lawn. It's recommended to dethatch your lawn once or twice a year using a rake or dethatcher attachment for your mower.
