  • One alternative to drywall is gypsum board. Gypsum board is made of a gypsum core sandwiched between two sheets of heavy paper. It is available in different thicknesses and fire-resistance ratings. Gypsum board is installed in much the same way as drywall. Another option is metal studs with plasterboard or acoustical tile. Metal studs are easier to work with than wood studs and can be used for both interior and exterior walls. They are also more moisture-resistant than wood studs. Plasterboard, also called wallboard, offers good sound insulation and fire resistance. Acoustical tile helps reduce noise levels in a room by up to 50%.
